Hello There, a poem

Just wrote this a few minutes ago.  It’s been a long time since I’ve tried to write a legitimate poem, and this’ll be the first one to go up on WordPress.  Let’s see how this one goes.

Hello There

Cast in gray, you haunt my dreams.

Your smile, beguiling —

Sends my wily thoughts scurrying

Back to their cold, dark cages.

They are the beasts that I alone must bare,

For if I do not, our love shall perish.

Yet it has never blossomed, our love,

Has it not?

No.  Dare I say it has not,

And with good cause.

The earth beneath our feet

Is much too hard, too bitter

For the sweet sap that nourishes you —

That I cannot provide you.

It is with good cause

That we cannot be,

For there is someone else that loves you

As who you really are,

And not as the woman

Whom the gentle wind whispers to.

You are not the one

Whom Fate has told

To shush me to sleep

Before I even have the chance to say,

“Hello there, beautiful”.

(Author’s Notes: As I was writing this, I envisioned the speaker of the poem as a man, but reading it again, I think it can be either male or female or animal.  To be honest, I don’t really care, and neither do the words in the poem. )
