Lust, a short free-association prose piece

Random words to get the ball rolling.

Inspired by this rendition of Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight”

Why do I want you? Is it really a bad thing? As a kid I’ve wanted toys.  I’ve wanted candy.  I’ve wanted money and things I shouldn’t have—couldn’t have.  But is it bad for me to want another person—another human being that if I broke I couldn’t put back together, that would come back to haunt me once I’ve finished trying to eat them?  That would ultimately push me away?

I see you sitting at the table all alone, telling the waitress with a faint smile that you want to wait a little longer before you place your order.  But you know I won’t come.  All I told you was probably a hoax to get your hopes up.  And in all of this, you haven’t taken notice.  Instead you keep looking at your watch, waiting for me.  Wanting me?
