The 2012 Olympic Games (and Writing?)

Not a sports fan in particular, but I do admire the athletes that devote their time and effort to go out and be their best.

Today I learned that Taekwondo is an Olympic Sport.  I also wondered what it would be like if there were a sport for writing (if there already isn’t one like these): the best story in fifteen or thirty minutes, the most moving poem in five.  But that would just be contradicting my belief in how one should judge art.

It would be akin to judging figure skating or gymnastics — trying to mesh technical skill and creativity into one seamless package.  Basketball isn’t an art in that sense, since it doesn’t demand the thoughts of judges but occasionally lends itself to critique.

But doesn’t critique lend itself to art?

Ugh, why isn’t this easy? Am I in denial of the truth?
